Audra McDonald's talents are unmatched in its breadth and diversity as a vocalist, and performer. She has been a six-time record recipient from her Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award she received in 2015 from Barack Obama. As a result of her soprano's luminous tone and her unrivaled ability to tell dramatic stories her success has been evident in Broadway and in the opera as well as in both film and television. In addition to her work in the theatre, she has a thriving career as a concert and recording artist who performs regularly at top venues around the globe. Born into a musical family McDonald was raised in Fresno California and received her classical training in the New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, a year after her Juilliard School, McDonald was awarded the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in the Musical" for her performance in Carousel. The following four years she was awarded two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. They were awarded in recognition of her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. In 2004, she was nominated to win her 4th Tony Award for her performance in A Raisin in the Sun together with Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her fifth Tony and first for the category of Leading Actress were won by her role as the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. In the year she received her Sixth Tony in the year 2014 her performance in Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill has become Broadway's most decorated performance. In 2017 she made the West End London West End debut, and was also nominated for the Olivier Award. The actress also broke the record for most awards won by one actor. McDonald also has credits for other productions in the theatre which include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV 2004 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nigh (2009) The Twelfth Night was her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut shuffle Along Or The Making of the Musical Sense of 1921 And All That Followed (16) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (192019) and Ohio State Murders (2023) McDonald first appeared on television as a dramatic actor on The Peabody Award winner CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First 100 years. After starring with Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly famous Disney/ABC version of Annie in 1999, McDonald was been a regular character in the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's Emmy-nominated performance of Emma Thompson in Mike Nichols' HBO film adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Wit was produced by Mike Nichols. McDonald's return to the network TV screen was in 2003, as she appeared alongside Josh Brolin in Mister Sterling. The actress became a character on The Bedford Diaries of the WB The Bedford Diaries The Bedford Diaries in early 2006. Following the season, she starred as in a role that was recurring on NBC's Television show Kidnapped. In the year 2016, McDonald was nominated for the fourth Emmy Awards for her performance as a character in HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, a special film. She also appeared in 2021 when she was a co-star in a telecast with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in the film The Bite, a pandemic film produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. Having first appeared as U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's medical show The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald reprised her part (now called Liz Reddick) as a season regular of The Good Fight on Paramount+ getting three Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. She guest stars as a guest star in Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
